What Would You Do?

Alright, obviously I don’t know everything about this movie (or the book for that matter), but this whole plot seems a bit silly.

First of all, I want to go on record as saying that I would hit the button AS SOON AS THE WORDS left the man’s mouth.  Second, this arbitrary form of control seems predictable as well as fictional.

Taking away any and all mystical aspects of this film, which it may or may not contain, I would accept no responsibility for the subsequent death of any or all individuals that may have died while I was pressing or after I pressed said button.

First off, how is it my fault that a man has decided to attach some fictitious value that connects a life and some button in some box somewhere.  I could just as easily say that if you flip some light switch in your living room someone will die.  While this may inhibit some from illuminating the room, the need for light may eventually rule out the idea that you will be responsible for someone’s ultimate demise if utilized.

Moreover, the very fact that there is a cause and effect situation put in place does not necessarily bring responsibility to your actions.  If I weren’t to believe this guy and flipped the switch am I criminally liable for the death of that executed human being?  I would say that I am not.  It is the person that executed the individual.

That brings us to my third point.  How is this execution going to take place?  A bullet, a virus, maybe even old age or natural causes.  Again, how am I responsible for someone else’s action of pulling a trigger or whatever needs to happen?  I am not their boss and they are acting of their own accord.  The best they can say is that the box/button told them to carry out the murder.

Now let’s take this one step further.  Even if I did believe that the pressure I apply to that button would kill someone, why would I be held responsible?  I’m not suggesting that action would be taken out of malice or knowledge that you wouldn’t get caught.  On the contrary, I am stating a corollary:  My actions on or about the button/light switch do not have any bearing on the free will of the executioner.

There could be an argument that I, myself, am the executioner however.  My answer to this is that I flip on that light every single day.  I did not rig it to kill, nor do I have any knowledge or as basis to believe that it could in fact do what the man said.

For those of you who may scoff at this and think that it would be my moral responsibility to not press that button, what would you do if you told the man no, so he said that he was going to give it to a kid and tell him NOT to press it.  Or put a sign out that said, free candy if you press this.  Or if he put it on the floor of an old woman’s house that had lost her glasses and would inadvertently press it while searching for her dropped glasses.  Would it be your responsibility then?

Would it be your responsibility to protect that button no matter what the cost, no matter how long it took, no matter how it affected you or your family?

The answer is simply “no.”

It is not your responsibility.  It is the responsibility of the maker/proposer of the situation to do the right thing and not kill someone.

Now, back to my original statement.  Would I press it?  YES!  IMMEDIATELY!!!

I refuse to be troubled by someone else’s game of morality.  The object of this game is to make me question my ethics to the point where I would sell them for (it doesn’t matter how much) money.  I would simply refuse to give them the satisfaction.  I know that that targeted individual would a. die anyway and b. not die unless mandated by God/destiny (whatever you believe).

I refuse to be manipulated in a game where some arrogant man believes he can solve all my problems with money and an ethical dilemma.  I would press the button and not take the money.  The blood is on his head and he would suffer the consequences.  Not only that, but I believe the powers that be would see it my way too.

There is no way that a murder suspect would not be found guilty if his testimony was, “the only reason I shot the person was because he pressed the button.  It’s not my fault he pressed it.  I had to do it.”

In short, this movie looks dumb.

Clermont police interview suspect in Obama 'Joker' posters

CLERMONT - Clermont police have interviewed one suspect who is admitting to putting up the dozens of posters pasted around the city depicting President Obama as the Joker character from the Batman film The Dark Knight, city officials confirmed.

Assistant City Manager Darren Gray said city officials have an individual "admitting to putting up 500" of the posters.

Clermont Police Capt. Eric Jensen said the male individual has admitted to putting up some signs, but investigators suspect others were involved and their investigation is continuing.

"We have talked to an individual," Jensen said. "He only admitted to some of it...We're still tracking down leads and talking to folks. We have not arrested anybody."

At this point officials are not sure how much damage was caused by the signs or the dollar amount associated with the clean-up.

Dozens of the posters were pasted around the city earlier this week. A pair of the posters were pasted to a Clermont Post Office collection box. They prompted the postmaster to contact the Postal Inspector's office, which is looking at potential federal crimes for defacing federal property.

City officials, meanwhile, are trying to determine what local crimes might be associated with the posting of the images on public and private properties. They've also been busy ripping down the sticky signs because they're a violation of city ordinance regarding illegal signs.

Jensen said he doesn't have a good count on the number of posters put up because, he said, "People are going out and tearing them down."

In a press release put out late today, Jensen said the suspect "also asked if he could video tape the encounter with the officers." Clermont Police declined that request.

"Currently we are still conducting interviews of victims, witnesses, and other suspects who were placing the Obama Joker Poster throughout our city," Jensen said in the statement. "We believe that the postings are the result of multiple suspects. We are hopeful that we can develop enough information to present charges of vandalism to the State Attorney's Office for review."

He did not have a specific reason why the individual who admitted to putting up the posters spent so much time sticking them to surfaces around the city, but Jensen suspects it may have something to do with a contest linked to the image of the President in white face and smeared lipstick, like the Joker.

Cedarville in all its Glory

XXXXXX  has left a new comment on the post "Svengali":

Dear Bannerman,

I'm sorry to hear this news. I'm also sorry to see that you point out the truth and name names but you yourself remain hidden behind a pseudonym.

I realize you won't post this, but I thought it important that you hear this (not your desperate truth-seeking readers:

These people are not trying to make it seem like there are "many" with the same opinion. That's a bit cowardice, and you seem to be projecting that image in your nonassociated blog posts.

This minority of individuals are seeking the same thing that you and your wandering readers are: truth.

I'm not saying you're wrong and they are right, or that they are wrong and you are right. I'm merely giving you a hint.

These people that you cite (and I'm sure this applies to you as well) are the children of the Almighty God. And being such, you are on the same team. With these individuals specifically, there is no intent of malice or hate even if they (or you) become embroiled in this battle for truth from time to time.

I would encourage to remain vigilant and ever aware that you may have an effect on the sons and daughters of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Having said this, feel free to stay involved in this hobby and see it through to the end, but keep in mind that life has been created for one purpose; and, dare I say it, this argument is not it. I would like to pass this sentiment on to the other "side" as well.

Feel free to publish this comment and my name and contact information. I will be publishing this post on my blog as well. I believe that I have not said anything that is counter to the Bible or our Father God.

Sincerely,

Petition to keep 1st Presbyterian Church of Ewing from being demolished.

Sign the petition HERE

To: ewingpres@preservationnj.org
Subject: Save the historic sanctuary of 1st Presbyterian Church of Ewing

The 1867 Sanctuary of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Ewing is an irreplaceable landmark that has served as a beautiful place of worship and a beacon to the entire community for more than 140 years. We call on the Church Session, as governing body of the 1st Presbyterian congregation, to delay plans for the church's demolition. Instead, we ask the church leadership to embrace the broad national, state and community support displayed during the recent successful fundraising campaign and engage the supportive congregation and their many new friends and advocates in an exploration of realistic solutions that will lead to preservation of the landmark sanctuary. Together, we believe, we can reach an inspired and sustainable result.

Andrew S. Kirby

p.s.

This church has been a landmark of Ewing and my family for years. Do not move hastily to remove history from our lives as well as our township. To do so would show a lack of foresight about which would be difficult to parallel.

The hope of humanity is intertwined in our History, and with history often times being rewritten by the liberal masses, humanity and families turn to landmarks and our surroundings.

Do not take away our History; do not take away our Sanctuary.
