If youve written a commercial mystery series, and they dont mention Berkley (or the other major mystery imprints), perhaps that agent isnt savvy enough, or simply isnt the right one for your manuscript. If youve done your homework, youre better equipped to make in knowledgeable decision.

The same holds true after youve signed on with an agent. Refrain from sending them a list of places you want your manuscript submitted. Thats like saying, I dont trust you to do your work. Few things annoyed me significantly more when I was an agent. And please, I beg you, dont contact an editor who received your manuscript through an agent, unless you know the editor personally. Following up is part of your agents work. However, it is (or should be) perfectly acceptable to ask where your e-book has been submitted and why a particular imprint isnt on the list.

Theres one terrific reference e-book for info about both publishers and agents: Jeff Hermans Guide, which is updated every year. It needs to become, since its long list of e-book agents and e-book publishers is ever-changing. It provides company contact info, names, submission policies, and genre preferences of both agents and publishers. If your agent mentions a publisher/imprint to you that you havent heard of, look them up in the guide, search for them on Amazon, and Google them.

In short, its always best to become as knowledgeable while you can about the industry. It can help you focus your manuscript, specifically if its within a commercial genre. Itll help you uncover an agent. Itll help you work with your agent to market your e-book to the right places, and identify regardless if your agent is doing the best he or she can with your manuscript. You dont need to have insider contacts or shell out the dough for a subscription to Publishers Weekly. Just do a little browsing of your Internet or the bookstore, and reap the benefits of your homework!
